RV Chassis & RV Airbags (Diesel Pushers)

There are generally two types of suspension employed in modern RV’s:

  • Torsion Bar Suspension
  • Air Bag Suspension

RV Torsion Bar Suspension

Torsion bar suspensions system use a steel bar (wrapped in a sleeve and encased in hard rubber to minimize road noise) connected to a lever arm to control up and down motion.


  • Smoother ride than leaf spring suspensions
  • Less effected by porpoiseing (bouncing while in transit)
  • Excellent resistance to tipping

Limitations & Potential problems:

  • Noisier ride than air bag suspension
  • Adjustments are done by hand and limit ride height range
  • Replacement bars are expensive

RV Air Bag Suspension

Air bag suspension systems use automatic pressure regulators that adjust the air pressure in each air bag to compensate for various tipping forces experienced during travel. Therefore, when you’re going around a tight corner or experiencing heavy cross winds the air bag system will automatically compensate for the lean of your RV.


  • Exceptionally smooth ride with reduced road noise and vibrations
  • Excellent side-to-side stability
  • Ride height is controlled pneumatically through a control valve and allows for a greater range

Limitations & Potential problems:

  • Porpoiseing (bouncing while in transit) can occur if shocks are bad
  • Air bags can develop leaks resulting in a constant hiss or blow out entirely
  • Pressure regulators or ride height control valve can fail

*Always make sure your air system is at operating PSI before traveling.
